I
hope you had a giggle over the video clip of Ireland's Dumbest Criminal which was on the TV news and going viral on the net recently. If you didn't catch it, it was a wonderful display of instant karma. A guy goes up to a car and throws a brick at the passenger side window. The brick rebounds and hits him in the face, knocking him out cold. The car owner returns seconds later and has him arrested. Good work karma! It may be a reection of the modern world we live in, but I far prefer the 'instant karma' version of the cosmic point system invented by the Buddhists, which is about earning enough 'good' karmic points in this life in order to place you in prime position for the start of the next game of life. Waiting for the next life to experience the divine balancing act of karma is just a little slow, or unbelievable, for most of us in our current pace of living and environment of religious scepticism, so it's refreshing to see this speeded up version in action. Like when an impatient, dangerous driver tailgates you then roars past you on a busy road, and you see him a few kilometres down the road pulled over by the police, lights ashing and ticket writing in progress. Or when you see a bully about to give a little guy a push, but instead he miscalculates and slips over in the rain – perfect payback. We learn a lot from instant karma when we are young. Like the toddler who tries to throw a cat in a swimming pool and ends up slipping in himself as the cat jumps to safety, or an older sibling winning the ght over the comest sun lounger only to sit down on a wasp. Somehow life has a great way of working out little injustices and paying back noble acts – like a person losing the money he has just found and not bothered trying to return, or another getting a big reward for returning a wallet. Let's hope that we start seeing some instant karma working its retribution on some of the bigger injustices that are currently happening around the world.

chance meeting at a social Christmas party eight years ago was a serendipitous moment for two professional Christchurch women. They had an instant connection and soon began mapping out a business and marketing strategy for Decipher Group, a human resource and recruitment company which they founded in April 2008. Leanne Crozier who had been working as a solicitor for eight years, and Sarcha Every a marketing and sales professional, had both developed an interest in recruitment and already had ten years' experience in the eld between them. Although their following rst seven years in business together has included dealing with the GFC fallout, losing their original ofce to the earthquakes and working out of various cafes, Decipher Group has blossomed. Somehow in amongst this busy lifestyle the two have married their respective partners and had children. I caught up with these two savvy women who have rmly entrenched themselves in the recruitment market in Christchurch…

How do you recruit the best talent for specific roles? Leanne: Our role is to sell the total opportunity to the market by creating excitement and interest from those people who didn't know they were even looking for a job. Often it's the passive candidates who are already in a great job that are the best people in the market. They need a compelling reason to consider an opportunity. What initially sparked your interest in the human resources and recruitment field? Leanne: I have always loved working with people and seeing them reach their potential. On the ip side, I have always enjoyed creating value in businesses so I was excited about the opportunity of marrying these two concepts together. How is your HR business different to others? Sarcha: We work exclusively with our clients so we have the added luxury of investing time to really understand their business. This

Sarcha: The economy is strong, people are feeling condent about business growth and expansion, and this is reected in the current employment market. We specialise in governance and executive level recruitment and don't expect to see any signicant decrease in opportunities at this level once the rebuild is complete. On a more personal note, if you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Leanne: It's going to be ok. Sarcha: When you are driving a big vehicle the back wheels don't follow the same track as the front wheels in a tight corner. That tip would have saved thousands. What one book would you suggest everyone read? Leanne: I think books should take you to somewhere special, a place where you can lose yourself in a great story. I love Ken Follett, Robert Ludlum and Marion Keyes right now. Sarcha: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? Leanne: Café Metro, King of Snake and Nobanno. Sarcha: Black Estate winery it has great food, amazing wine and we can take the kids.
What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? Leanne: I used to be a Crusaders cheerleader. Sarcha: My rst car was a pink 6 volt VW that I bought when I was 14. Leanne and Tivoli What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn't be doing this”? Leanne: Saying, “Yes just one more…..” Sarcha: Driving up on the kerb to get into our house which resulted in a big scrape down our car. What is your proudest achievement? Leanne: This year, my proudest achievement was sending my gorgeous ve-year-old off to school. She told her teacher on her rst day that it had been the best day of her life. Sarcha: Apart from having an amazing husband and two gorgeous girls, I am really proud of how Decipher Group has grown from its inception.
What do you like to do on a Sunday afternoon? Leanne: Lie in the sun and read. Sarcha: Read interior design magazines and re off all sorts of random emails to our architect, builder and interior designer with my latest thoughts. What are you like at parties? Leanne: Loud and dancing. Sarcha: Very sociable, I work the room and then do a workout on the danceoor. Yes, I dance like nobody is watching. What's next on the wish list? Leanne: A holiday in Vegas and Hawaii – which has been booked! Sarcha: Full suspension mountain bike…or is that my husband's wish list for me?

t this year's Christchurch Holi Festival of Colours, never-beforeseen Indian fusion performances will light up The Commons on Kilmore Street in celebration of the city's diversity. “Holi's purpose is to bring people together as one, no matter their background,” event co-organiser, Sandeep Khanna, says. In India, Holi is traditionally a day to connect, forgive and look ahead. People throw colours in the streets, marking each other as equals. These themes are why organisers, Revel Events and the Indian Social and Cultural Club, wanted to bring Holi to Christchurch. Now in its second year, the focus is on showcasing the people of Canterbury. On the day, the Abacus Bhangra group will combine forces with Ngãi Tahu's top kapa haka performers. Japanese taiko drumming will provide the beat to popular South Indian folk dance, with tap dancers set to join the party as well. International DJs will play a mix of modern Indian dance tracks to get the crowd on their feet in the colour-throwing zone. Saturday March 21, 11am – 3pm at The Commons, 70 Kilmore Street. Where words fail, music speaks.” Hans Christian Andersen understood the power of music and Christchurch's award-winning barbershop chorus, The Plainsmen, understand it too. And they are on the hunt for more men to share their secret and join their ranks.

or men in particular, group singing can provide a range of benets not easily found elsewhere. Stereotypically, men are 'doers' and can often be less socially engaged than their female counterparts. Group singing provides a way to enjoy social interaction whilst also presenting a challenge – successful harmonizing, or ringing a chord, is no easy feat. The Plainsmen's newly appointed musical director Rob Grieve explains, “Singing is good for us in so many ways. It's good for our lungs, memory and posture. Research also shows that singing in harmony affects the brain – it triggers the release of dopamine and oxytocin, which are known as the 'feel good' chemicals and are associated with social bonding.” The Plainsmen are an eclectic bunch of men who sing unaccompanied harmony. They range from professors and businessmen to bus drivers and teachers, and at times the age range of members has spanned eight decades. But despite their diversity, they all have one important thing in common – singing. Their love of singing provides the glue that bonds them despite their obvious differences. The Plainsmen take their craft seriously. Last year, the group placed fth in the national championships and under the leadership of their new musical director, they will achieve even greater heights.

The minutes from the meeting are then sent to the client within 24 hours, so they know what was discussed,” Colin says.

If walls could talk There are homes which tell a story – those which have history embedded in their bones and offer a glimpse into what life once was.
T
he fresh faced Merivale Manor has a tale to tell of its own, the journey from grand residential home to boarding house to its recently completed refurbishment. “She's effectively a brand new old lady,” says Wayne Peat, operator of the luxury accommodation with wife Karen. Wayne and Karen purchased the business a year ago, after many months of searching all over New Zealand for a suitable property. Wayne says it was the manor itself which drew them to Christchurch, and in doing so brought him back to the city in which he grew up. The manor follows a square Italianate style, with a wide veranda wrapping around the lower oor and a small central balcony upstairs. Designed by architect Samuel Farr and built in 1882 for businessman Henry Webb, it was home to the Webb family for many years. Following Webb's death in 1901, the property was continually subdivided, eventually becoming a boarding house in 1911 and hidden away behind a brick house in the 1950s. “It was basically brought back to life in 2004,” says Wayne, with extensive work taking place to restore the property, including replacing the old brick house at the front of the property with eight modern spa studios. It is this work which Wayne credits with allowing the building to ride out the Christchurch earthquakes relatively unscathed. Strategic planning meant that Merivale Manor

was operational every day following the earthquakes, with repairs to the studios and the manor recently completed. Restoration of the original plasterwork, fresh paint inside and out and re-piling, was carried out at the manor, along with extensive refurbishments to the entire site.
The result is quite simply a beautiful historic building which now provides accommodation unlike any other in the city. The original marble and wooden re surrounds remain, with strong links to local cultural history throughout the manor. Colonial and Maori artworks sit side by side, and historic images show what Christchurch

looked like in the manor's early days. “Every suite is a little different,” says Wayne, with all taking advantage of their location within the building and its leafy surrounds. The suites are aptly named to link with the history of the building. Webb, and its Maori translation, Te Wepu are two of the manor's suites, along with Peacock, the maiden name of Webb's wife. Te Wepu consists of two large bedrooms, a full kitchen, and dining and living space, with Wayne saying the spacious suite, and at times the entire manor, has proved very popular for wedding groups as they prepare for their big day. Karen's touch is felt throughout the building, with the business providing the perfect opportunity to showcase her interior design talents. Everything inside the manor and the spa suites has been carefully selected by
Karen, including homeware, furniture and the abundance of fresh owers. “It's how you would like your home to be,” says Wayne of the look and feel that they wanted to create. For Karen and Wayne, Merivale Manor has brought them a new home and a change in lifestyle, from the busy corporate world which enabled the family to spend many years living and commuting across the globe, to working together in the role of full time managers with a two minute stroll to work. Their love of hosting and travel is now shared with the many visitors from New Zealand and overseas who choose to stay with them. “We want to share the history of this place the highlights of Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island,” says Wayne. When the Christchurch Casino Mashina Lounge hosted the Christchurch Stands Tall auction to send them to new homes on February 11, those giraffes raised a massive $475,650 for charity.

NZ to NY Model and entrepreneur Jessica Minh Anh, who produces the world's most unconventional catwalks, is introducing a brand new fashion experience to the Big Apple on March 19 by selecting Christchurch fashion designer Wendy Jerard to represent New Zealand and show her label Frances Jerard.

he global fashion sensation will transform Hudson River's giant glass boat into a 100-metre oating runway. Guests will be seated facing the multi-faceted glass window and watch models walking in front of them using the river as their runway. Thanks to the panoramic view from the boat, New York's famous skyline and its architectural masterpieces such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and One World Trade Centre, will be the iconic backdrop for the sensational catwalk. Would you like the teeth replaced with something that stays put? Do you have a tooth that needs to come out and you just don't know what to do next? There are, basically, two options that don't involve teeth that are removable. 1. Fixed bridge This is an option if there is a reasonably sound tooth on each side of the missing tooth (or teeth). Very simply, a bridge is a ceramic or gold and ceramic multiple-tooth unit with a crown at each end. The crowns are bonded over the prepared existing teeth and the missing tooth or teeth replaced by 'pontics', or false teeth, suspended just over the gum and attached to each crown. Depending on the situation, one or several teeth can be replaced this way. Properly planned and placed bridges are solid, fully functional and look very natural. With a little care they can provide many years of service. 2. Implants Dental implants are small, pure titanium screw-shaped xtures that are surgically placed in your jaw. Following their placement, they are left to heal in place for three or more
months. During this time, 'osseointegration' occurs, which basically means the bone heals around the implant xtures, locking them into place permanently. Once 'integrated', false teeth, crowns, or other appliances may be solidly attached to them, either with screws or cement. If only one tooth is to be replaced, generally a porcelain crown will be attached to a single implant xture. If a few teeth are missing, likely more than one xture will be required. If a full arch is to be restored (all the upper or all the lower teeth are missing), several xtures can be placed, with the full arch bridge either screwed to or clipped on to the xtures. The end result is a long term, strong, functional and natural looking dentition.”

When owner Sandy Williams expanded her store area she invited Lisa to share the space, with Louis Who setting up residence in a corner of the warehouse. The three Kiwis included Thomas Hishon from Orphans Kitchen, Xin Jing of Cocoro and William Mordido of Chikos, as well as Peter who is currently based in Melbourne. They presented their signature dishes to a panel of esteemed chefs including, Peter Gilmore, Quay; Peter Doyle, Est; Jacques Reymond, L'Hôtel Gitan; Guy Grossi, Grossi Florentino; and Giovanni Pilu, Pilu at Freshwater. elements: Ingredients, skill, originality, presentation, and message. Peter comes from a pedigree of renowned restaurants. He moved to Australia in 2010 from New Zealand, and has worked at Ezard, Melbourne, and The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld. He has spent the last four years at Attica, (No. 21 in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants) under the tutelage of Ben Shewry, and recently launched his own ne dining popup restaurant, IDES at Persillade. Runners up included Lene Tan of The
European, Melbourne with her dish titled Sanguine, followed closely by South Australian Chef, Chris Chilvers presenting a dish of wood roasted S.A. cockles, glazed eel, native succulents and lamb consommé and William Mordido of Chikos, Auckland, with his dish titled The Modernist Halo-Halo. How to make an Amaretto Shine Amaretto Shine is one of my original recipes and the perfect accompaniment to a perfect summer. My love for this decadent almond liqueur is unmatched, its sweetish taste clings to the palate and can be enjoyed neat or combined with a little something extra to make it 'shine'.
Glassware Serve in either a bistro or rocks glass, my personal choice would be the Luigi Bormioli Rubino available from Total Food Equipment.
Recipe 45ml Galliano Amaretto 15ml Absolut Raspberri 10ml Lemon Juice 15ml Gomme (Simple Syrup) Orange slice Methodology 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Trendy turf Gen Y babies and the offspring of the 21st century who were 'tweens' circa 1998 and religiously dedicated themselves to a diet of pop culture will no doubt be familiar with the “hoochy mama show your nana” lyrics broadcast in perpetuity by radio stations the world over until they lost their street cred.

Opposites attract Blueberries and corn salsa? Blueberry pizza with honeyed goat cheese and prosciutto? These odd pairings may seem out of the ordinary, but are sure to leave your tastebuds tingling with their quirky, but delicious, avour collisions.
Blueberry & Corn Salsa Ingredients 1 punnet fresh blueberries 1½ C corn kernels (fresh or grilled) ¼ C diced cucumber ¼ C diced red onion 1 Tbsp diced jalapenos, seeds and ribs removed juice of 1 fresh lime 1 Tbsp fresh chopped coriander (or basil or parsley) salt and pepper to taste Directions 1. Toss the blueberries, corn, cucumber, red onion and jalapenos together in a large bowl. 2. Add the lime and coriander, toss again and season to taste with salt and pepper. 3. Refrigerate. Best eaten same day it's made.
Blueberry Creamsicles Ingredients 2 C frozen blueberries ½ cup frozen strawberries (partially defrosted) 1 C plain low fat yoghurt ¼ C sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp lemon zest 1/3 C cream Directions 1. Put berries and yoghurt into a blender and mix. 2. Add sugar, vanilla, lemon juice and lemon zest and blend further until mixed. 3. Whip cream until soft peaks form. Fold into blueberry yogurt mixture. 4. Pour blueberry mixture into small popsicle containers. 5. Freeze for 1 hour until mixture is lightly frozen. Put wooden sticks or plastic spoons in mixture. 6. Let freeze for several more hours before eating. Enjoy!
Blueberry Pizza with Honeyed Goat Cheese & Prosciutto Ingredients ½ C goat cheese 2 Tbsp honey 3 atbreads (naan/pita) ½ pint fresh blueberries 4-5 slices thinly shaved prosciutto 3 tsp fresh thyme leaves Directions 1. Preheat oven to 220C. In a bowl, combine goat cheese and honey until well blended. 2. Place atbread on a baking sheet and spread the goat cheese evenly on top, then add the fresh blueberries. 3. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes until the atbread is toasted and the blueberries softened. 4. Remove from the oven and add prosciutto and 1 teaspoon of thyme to each pizza. Slice and serve.

The front door is a great place to test out bold colour, or at least a contrasting colour to your exterior palette. Hallways can be tricky spaces to work with, and aren't always as proportionally grand as we would like them to be. When it comes to decorating a hallway, treat it with just as much importance as any other part of the house. These types of transitional spaces are the perfect places to be bold and condent – to be creative with colour and pattern, to experiment, and make big statements with paint, wallpaper, artworks and lighting. Avoid recessed lighting in a long hallway; this type of space lends itself perfectly to at least two hanging pendants, which will be a much more eye-catching alternative. If your hall is long, consider painting the end wall in a darker colour so it seems closer. If your hall is narrow, paint the side walls lighter so it seems wider.

With the recent passing of the fourth anniversary of the February earthquake, many are just now nalising their claims with EQC or insurers for earthquake damage. It has been a long arduous road for many, however once you nd yourself at the point of reaching agreement around what your rebuild or repairs may look like, you are also potentially entering the most creative and exciting stage of the process!

hether it is a rebuild on your existing land, repairing your existing house and land or building a new house on a new section, each scenario presents you with an opportunity to create or reinvent your perfect outdoor lifespaceTM.
Who covers what? Generally household insurance policies will cover driveways, fencing, paths, paving and swimming pools. Some insurance policies may also include a landscaping allowance which can be used for softscaping. EQC covers the land under your house, within 8 metres of your house and the land your access way is built on up to 60 metres. Since Canterbury’s quakes, many quantity surveyors have been hard at work providing independent advice on the costings and scopes of work generated by insurers for building repairs and rebuilds. However a quantity surveyor can also make assessments in relation to landscaping, providing assurance that your insurer has got it right. Everyone knows of someone for whom a quantity surveyor has arrived at signicantly different conclusions (and costings!) to their insurer in relation to house repairs. This can be equally applicable to landscaping, particularly if the repair strategy for the landscaping has been formulated without specialised knowledge and expertise in all the areas of hard and soft landscape works.
Seek advice early! While it is undoubtedly vital to choose carefully the builder you engage to repair your home, it is equally important to take advice from a landscape architect before commencing your landscape works. Often the contract you enter in to with your builder will include provision for hardscaping. Without the input of a landscape architect, patios, paths and decks will be positioned in the most cost effective position without consideration of the implications for the design and aesthetic of your outdoor areas. Involving a landscape architect from the outset will ensure that the design concept for the building and the landscaping will work together in synergy and maximise the impact of your budget.

In doing so you are much more likely to achieve your desired outcome with better design, less stress and greater efciency. Having those involved in the design and construction of your repair/rebuild simultaneously ensures far better communication and sharing of information between all involved.

We were recently invited to contribute to a tender. It is a site of signicance because of its location in part of the city that we, as the public, have elevated onto a pedestal through the formulation of our City Plan. From the Share An Idea campaign it was identied that we wanted a greener more compact city, one with better urban spaces, one which embraced innovation and one which grouped users in a logical way; ideas resulted in the 'frame' and precincts to deliver this vision.
INNOVATION REQUIRES IMAGINATION, TIME, ENERGY AND LATERAL THINKING.

he documentation to tender itself was around forty pages in length, a signicant addition to the connes already placed on the site by the City Plan. What the tender document does is put a box around the site. While rules and the maximum standards are prescribed in the City Plan, the tender document takes it a step further developing a set of minimum standards including height and width, minimum footprint, the prescriptive use, how the building will engage with other sites, where the car park might be, how quickly the design and construction will be undertaken and so forth. In an aesthetic manner, while required by the tender document to design a 'landmark building', creativity and innovation is suppressed by the prescriptive measures. Innovation isn't achieved through the depth of someone's pocket but by how wide and open their eyes are. Innovation requires

imagination, time, energy and lateral thinking about how to challenge the 'normal', not necessarily to comply with it. An over thought prescriptive approach puts the blinkers on. In this case the opportunity is lost to achieve what we, as a city, wanted in the rebuild. It is taking away the discussions around landmark buildings that we can be proud of and places too many connes around what is allowed to be achieved. Landmark buildings are those buildings which polarise and energise debate. Internationally every great city has them. They create a stir in their day but with hindsight bring a respect for their forward thinking. What happens through prescription is a loss of innovation, it takes away the opportunity to be inventive.
