I

hope you had a giggle over the video clip of Ireland's Dumbest Criminal which was on the TV news and going viral on the net recently. If you didn't catch it, it was a wonderful display of instant karma. A guy goes up to a car and throws a brick at the passenger side window. The brick rebounds and hits him in the face, knocking him out cold. The car owner returns seconds later and has him arrested. Good work karma! It may be a reection of the modern world we live in, but I far prefer the 'instant karma' version of the cosmic point system invented by the Buddhists, which is about earning enough 'good' karmic points in this life in order to place you in prime position for the start of the next game of life. Waiting for the next life to experience the divine balancing act of karma is just a little slow, or unbelievable, for most of us in our current pace of living and environment of religious scepticism, so it's refreshing to see this speeded up version in action. Like when an impatient, dangerous driver tailgates you then roars past you on a busy road, and you see him a few kilometres down the road pulled over by the police, lights ashing and ticket writing in progress. Or when you see a bully about to give a little guy a push, but instead he miscalculates and slips over in the rain – perfect payback. We learn a lot from instant karma when we are young. Like the toddler who tries to throw a cat in a swimming pool and ends up slipping in himself as the cat jumps to safety, or an older sibling winning the ght over the comest sun lounger only to sit down on a wasp. Somehow life has a great way of working out little injustices and paying back noble acts – like a person losing the money he has just found and not bothered trying to return, or another getting a big reward for returning a wallet. Let's hope that we start seeing some instant karma working its retribution on some of the bigger injustices that are currently happening around the world.

Think about it… “Karma has no problem getting back in touch with you when need be.” - Anon

FIVE MINUTES

five minutes with Leanne & Sarcha A

chance meeting at a social Christmas party eight years ago was a serendipitous moment for two professional Christchurch women. They had an instant connection and soon began mapping out a business and marketing strategy for Decipher Group, a human resource and recruitment company which they founded in April 2008. Leanne Crozier who had been working as a solicitor for eight years, and Sarcha Every a marketing and sales professional, had both developed an interest in recruitment and already had ten years' experience in the eld between them. Although their following rst seven years in business together has included dealing with the GFC fallout, losing their original ofce to the earthquakes and working out of various cafes, Decipher Group has blossomed. Somehow in amongst this busy lifestyle the two have married their respective partners and had children. I caught up with these two savvy women who have rmly entrenched themselves in the recruitment market in Christchurch…

means we can use our professional networks to nd genuine candidates that have the right set of transferrable skills, relevant industry experience and organisational 't' to take their business to the next level. How do you recruit the best talent for specific roles? Leanne: Our role is to sell the total opportunity to the market by creating excitement and interest from those people who didn't know they were even looking for a job. Often it's the passive candidates who are already in a great job that are the best people in the market. They need a compelling reason to consider an opportunity. What initially sparked your interest in the human resources and recruitment field? Leanne: I have always loved working with people and seeing them reach their potential. On the ip side, I have always enjoyed creating value in businesses so I was excited about the opportunity of marrying these two concepts together. How is your HR business different to others? Sarcha: We work exclusively with our clients so we have the added luxury of investing time to really understand their business. This

Please give us an overview of the recruitment sector in Christchurch. Sarcha: The economy is strong, people are feeling condent about business growth and expansion, and this is reected in the current employment market. We specialise in governance and executive level recruitment and don't expect to see any signicant decrease in opportunities at this level once the rebuild is complete. There is also a level of buoyancy across the whole agribusiness sector. Continues over page

What are the top five industries that you are asked to recruit in? Leanne: Agri-business, nancial services, professional services, manufacturing and construction.

On a more personal note, if you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Leanne: It's going to be ok. Sarcha: When you are driving a big vehicle the back wheels don't follow the same track as the front wheels in a tight corner. That tip would have saved thousands. What one book would you suggest everyone read? Leanne: I think books should take you to somewhere special, a place where you can lose yourself in a great story. I love Ken Follett, Robert Ludlum and Marion Keyes right now. Sarcha: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

t this year's Christchurch Holi Festival of Colours, never-beforeseen Indian fusion performances will light up The Commons on Kilmore Street in celebration of the city's diversity. “Holi's purpose is to bring people together as one, no matter their background,” event co-organiser, Sandeep Khanna, says. In India, Holi is traditionally a day to connect, forgive and look ahead. People throw colours in the streets, marking each other as equals. These themes are why organisers, Revel Events and the Indian Social and Cultural Club, wanted to bring Holi to Christchurch. Now in its second year, the focus is on showcasing the people of Canterbury. On the day, the Abacus Bhangra group will combine forces with Ngãi Tahu's top kapa haka performers. Japanese taiko drumming will provide the beat to popular South Indian folk dance, with tap dancers set to join the party as well. International DJs will play a mix of modern Indian dance tracks to get the crowd on their feet in the colour-throwing zone. Saturday March 21, 11am – 3pm at The Commons, 70 Kilmore Street. hat if the French didn't stop at Akaroa? Mon Dieu! Le Sud Written by Dave Armstrong plays at The Court Theatre from 14 March - 18 April. Sparks y, passions are ignited and political correctness is ambéed, as French, English and Maori sensitivities clash in this sharp, hilarious, sexy comedy. Renowned womaniser Francois Duvauchelle is the Leader of Le Sud, an independent French-speaking country to the south of North Zealand, where the people live contentedly, work just 30 hours a week and enjoy long wine-fuelled lunches. The country also has huge hydro-electric resources. To the north, a free-market experiment has landed the English speaking country of North Zealand in recession. They eye their French socialist neighbours jealously. In desperation North Zealand send a delegation south. Led by conservative PM Jim Petersen, they limp, pimp and pawn their way through negotiations with Le Sud in an attempt to pull their country out of economic meltdown. or men in particular, group singing can provide a range of benets not easily found elsewhere. Stereotypically, men are 'doers' and can often be less socially engaged than their female counterparts. Group singing provides a way to enjoy social interaction whilst also presenting a challenge – successful harmonizing, or ringing a chord, is no easy feat. The Plainsmen's newly appointed musical director Rob Grieve explains, “Singing is good for us in so many ways. It's good for our lungs, memory and posture. Research also shows that singing in harmony affects the brain – it triggers the release of dopamine and oxytocin, which are known as the 'feel good' chemicals and are associated with social bonding.” The Plainsmen are an eclectic bunch of men who sing unaccompanied harmony. They range from professors and businessmen to bus drivers and teachers, and at times the age range of members has spanned eight decades. But despite their diversity, they all have one important thing in common – singing. Their love of singing provides the glue that bonds them despite their obvious differences. The Plainsmen take their craft seriously. Last year, the group placed fth in the national championships and under the leadership of their new musical director, they will achieve even greater heights.

SING OUT LOUD OR UNDER YOUR BREATH, THE CHOICE IS YOURS. ONE OF THE PLAINSMEN WILL BE YOUR HOST FOR THE NIGHT AND WILL BE AVAILABLE TO ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS.

As well as the national championships, The Plainsmen perform at different times throughout the year and across the country, and some quartets within the group even sing overseas. President Carl McGregor says the regular Monday night practice sessions are a highlight of his week. “I would encourage anyone who thinks they can sing to come along to our open night or join us any Monday. The rst step is often the hardest but no one has regretted it yet.” To join The Plainsmen or nd out more call Rob on (03) 383 2239 or 021 159 9231. OUT & ABOUT

The family tradition looks like continuing into the fourth generation, with Colin's son Hayden, 15, already helping out on building sites and keen to join the family rm.

“We

e are a strong Canterbury rm and are nancially secure, so our clients can have complete condence in us. We are professionals and take pride in building homes of the highest quality to meet our clients' expectations. We bring all projects in on time and on budget, and we look forward to building many more architecturally designed homes in this part of town,” Colin says. For award-winning building company Gregg Builders, the process of building a home is different from that of most other building companies. “We have a team of professionals that are involved in the whole process. We have a qualied quantity surveyor, who does the pricing and prepares

fully detailed progress reports on claims once a month, which the client receives. We have an independent professional programmer who prepares a timeline schedule from start date to completion, including all the critical paths that need to be followed. This is monitored every four weeks so everyone involved, including the client, knows exactly where we are at as the job progresses,” owner Colin Gregg says. “The team also has fortnightly site meetings, with the agenda for each meeting being sent in advance to everyone involved in the project, including the client. The minutes from the meeting are then sent to the client within 24 hours, so they know what was discussed,” Colin says.

Gregg Builders works with all the leading architects in Christchurch, and specialises in building high-end homes for clients in the Merivale/Fendalton areas. “The interior designers and landscapers we have used for many years are all highly skilled professionals. I am very proud of our team and the work they do and I wouldn't change a single person,” Colin says.

If walls could talk There are homes which tell a story – those which have history embedded in their bones and offer a glimpse into what life once was.

T

he fresh faced Merivale Manor has a tale to tell of its own, the journey from grand residential home to boarding house to its recently completed refurbishment. “She's effectively a brand new old lady,” says Wayne Peat, operator of the luxury accommodation with wife Karen. Wayne and Karen purchased the business a year ago, after many months of searching all over New Zealand for a suitable property. Wayne says it was the manor itself which drew them to Christchurch, and in doing so brought him back to the city in which he grew up. The manor follows a square Italianate style, with a wide veranda wrapping around the lower oor and a small central balcony upstairs. Designed by architect Samuel Farr and built in 1882 for businessman Henry Webb, it was home to the Webb family for many years. Following Webb's death in 1901, the property was continually subdivided, eventually becoming a boarding house in 1911 and hidden away behind a brick house in the 1950s. “It was basically brought back to life in 2004,” says Wayne, with extensive work taking place to restore the property, including replacing the old brick house at the front of the property with eight modern spa studios. It is this work which Wayne credits with allowing the building to ride out the Christchurch earthquakes relatively unscathed. Strategic planning meant that Merivale Manor

was operational every day following the earthquakes, with repairs to the studios and the manor recently completed. Restoration of the original plasterwork, fresh paint inside and out and re-piling, was carried out at the manor, along with extensive refurbishments to the entire site.

The result is quite simply a beautiful historic building which now provides accommodation unlike any other in the city. The original marble and wooden re surrounds remain, with strong links to local cultural history throughout the manor. looked like in the manor's early days. “Every suite is a little different,” says Wayne, with all taking advantage of their location within the building and its leafy surrounds. The suites are aptly named to link with the history of the building. Webb, and its Maori translation, Te Wepu are two of the manor's suites, along with Peacock, the maiden name of Webb's wife. Te Wepu consists of two large bedrooms, a full kitchen, and dining and living space, with Wayne saying the spacious suite, and at times the entire manor, has proved very popular for wedding groups as they prepare for their big day. Karen's touch is felt throughout the building, with the business providing the perfect opportunity to showcase her interior design talents. Everything inside the manor and the spa suites has been carefully selected by

Karen, including homeware, furniture and the abundance of fresh owers. “It's how you would like your home to be,” says Wayne of the look and feel that they wanted to create. For Karen and Wayne, Merivale Manor has brought them a new home and a change in lifestyle, from the busy corporate world which enabled the family to spend many years living and commuting across the globe, to working together in the role of full time managers with a two minute stroll to work. Their love of hosting and travel is now shared with the many visitors from New Zealand and overseas who choose to stay with them. “We want to share the history of this place the highlights of Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island,” says Wayne. Christchurch designer shows in New York…

NZ to NY Model and entrepreneur Jessica Minh Anh, who produces the world's most unconventional catwalks, is introducing a brand new fashion experience to the Big Apple on March 19 by selecting Christchurch fashion designer Wendy Jerard to represent New Zealand and show her label Frances Jerard.

T

he global fashion sensation will transform Hudson River's giant glass boat into a 100-metre oating runway. Guests will be seated facing the multi-faceted glass window and watch models walking in front of them using the river as their runway. Thanks to the panoramic view from the boat, New York's famous skyline and its architectural masterpieces such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and One World Trade Centre, will be the iconic backdrop for the sensational catwalk. Similar to Jessica Minh Anh's previous fashion phenomena, J Spring Fashion Show 2015 will present a combination of haute couture, high end ready-to-wear, and luxury accessory collections from four continents. Her catwalks are more than just a fashion presentation, as “they combine art, architecture, culture, and fashion”.

Wendy Jerard Frances Jerard is taking an ultra-feminine oral and lace collection to the grand catwalk. Named "NZ to NY", the collection consists of stunning formal suits, cocktail and evening wear, as well as day wear. On selecting Frances Jerard, Jessica Minh Anh said “I love the creative mix of colours and texture in Frances' designs. Her vibrant multi-layered dresses accentuate a woman's body. The entire collection is fun and irtatious yet sophisticated and elegant.”

Indonesian powerhouse Bateeq is also set to impress with a heritage inspired collection, which combines traditional motifs and contemporary bold designs. the skin you are in!

The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic at 80 Wairakei Road is there to help you love the skin you are in, and if you aren't happy with your skin they have lots of treatment options to sort it out.

D

r Brigid Lee and Denise say that all of their clients want to look well and healthy, not necessarily younger, and the key to a healthy appearance is well hydrated, luminous skin. It is best to prevent the brown spots and ne lines caused by sundamage before they happen by using a good SPF cream but even once there is sun-damage present there are multiple treatment options to reverse it. A lot of the treatments available from Skin Specialists nowadays actually can regenerate skin cells and slow down the ageing process. The best skin anti-ager available to help repair the ageing process is a retinoid cream. Retinoids are vitamin A derived compounds that have been proven to boost collagen production and cell turn-over (so your skin behaves like a 20 year olds again!). Retinoids also reduce oil production, unclog pores and smooth skin giving your skin a brighter, healthier appearance. Retinoids have been used for skin rejuvenation since the 1970s. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has a selection of retinoids available with several being 'doctor only' formulations which are prescription-strength. In clinic, exfoliating treatments such as light peels

use a client's own blood to help regenerate the skin and is a popular option for those who like the idea of healing the ageing process by using their own body's healing capabilities. The best results are obtained by mixing and matching the treatments to the clients needs, which is the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic's specialty. Call them for a free rst consult today.

IN CLINIC, EXFOLIATING TREATMENTS SUCH AS LIGHT PEELS AND MICROHYDRABRASION CAN MAKE SKIN LOOK BRIGHTER AND HEALTHIER BY REMOVING THE TOP, DULL LAYERS OF SKIN.

and micro-hydrabrasion can make skin look brighter and healthier by removing the top, dull layers of skin. A slightly deeper treatment called skin stamping stimulates collagen production in the dermis. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic uses a Dermapen® which makes thousands of tiny holes in the skin. By doing this it helps to improve skin texture while minimising ne lines, sunspots and even acne scars. IPL is always popular in the cooler months to clear the skin of sun-damage. IPL uses a very intense pulsed light to remove brown pigments and broken blood vessels from the skin leaving it looking clearer and brighter. As it puts controlled heat deep into the skin it also stimulates collagen production. Platelet Rich Plasma (the vampire facial) treatments Metropol March 12, 2015 21

Filling the gaps W

ith over 25 years' experience with implants and other toothreplacement systems, Dentistry on Merivale can answer any questions you may have. If you do have questions, feel free to give them a call on (03) 355 8297 or email dentistry@merivale.co.nz. Telephone consults with Dr David Walsh are welcome and there is no charge for a chat. Here is what David has to say about replacement teeth… “Do you have a denture replacing a few missing teeth and it's just not working out? Would you like the teeth replaced with something that stays put? Do you have a tooth that needs to come out and you just don't know what to do next? There are, basically, two options that don't involve teeth that are removable. 1. Fixed bridge This is an option if there is a reasonably sound tooth on each side of the missing tooth (or teeth). Very simply, a bridge is a ceramic or gold and ceramic multiple-tooth unit with a crown at each end. The crowns are bonded over the prepared existing teeth and the missing tooth or teeth replaced by 'pontics', or false teeth, suspended just over the gum and attached to each crown. Depending on the situation, one or several teeth can be replaced this way. Properly planned and placed bridges are solid, fully functional and look very natural. With a little care they can provide many years of service. 2. Implants Dental implants are small, pure titanium screw-shaped xtures that are surgically placed in your jaw. Following their placement, they are left to heal in place for three or more

months. During this time, 'osseointegration' occurs, which basically means the bone heals around the implant xtures, locking them into place permanently. Once 'integrated', false teeth, crowns, or other appliances may be solidly attached to them, either with screws or cement. If only one tooth is to be replaced, generally a porcelain crown will be attached to a single implant xture. If a few teeth are missing, likely more than one xture will be required. If a full arch is to be restored (all the upper or all the lower teeth are missing), several xtures can be placed, with the full arch bridge either screwed to or clipped on to the xtures. The end result is a long term, strong, functional and natural looking dentition.”

Hairstyling in Downtown Addington Hair care should be a necessity, not a luxury. A decent 'do' improves your condence, communicates personality and, to a degree, makes you more approachable and employable. The Hairdressing Place on Wrights Road is all about making clients look and feel radiantly respectable.

THEY PRODUCE HIGH-END COLOURING AND STYLING AT VERY REASONABLE PRICE POINTS AND REFUSE TO COMPROMISE ON QUALITY. Andrea and Justin

T

he Hairdressing Place opened to the public in October 2014. The sleek and modern salon, situated in the industrial area of downtown Addington, is where director Andrea Small and managing director Justin Owen work their magic. And with Andrea's husband Jonny of J Small Contracting completing the t-out the space has been expertly tailored to Andrea's knowledgeable and tasteful salon-specic requirements. Andrea and Justin have, between them, over 30 years' experience in barbering, meaning both men and women are in equally capable hands. They produce high-end colouring and styling at very reasonable price points and refuse to compromise on quality despite the somewhat bargain pricing. They are proud to be one of only two exclusive

Keune salons in Christchurch. Keune – pronounced Koo-nay – is a breakthrough product of Dutch heritage and the only range that Andrea and Justin believe has exceeded expectations in terms of hair care products currently on the market, “ideal for those who want instant gratication”. It is a luxurious range that is relatively new to the South Island. The colouring products are silk protein based to ensure hair is naturally luminous post-treatment, and many people visit the salon solely for their product range. Andrea and Justin believe client care extends beyond the appointment itself. They are excited to announce the launch of their monthly 'how to' tutorial evenings, the rst being invitation only and focussing on all

things curls and waves, though these evenings will soon be open invitation with the option of 'bring a friend'. They also take care of their clients with a loyalty system that begins with $10 off your rst service. Once this has been used clients are added to the VIP database for perks like receiving a free product on every 10th visit (for the ladies) and a free cut on every 10th visit (for the men). The salon is open six days a week with late nights Tuesday and Thursday. Visit The Hairdressing Place at 3/107 Wrights Road, tucked in behind Pulse Café. Follow them on facebook – simply search 'The Hairdressing Place'. To make an appointment phone (03) 338 0338.

Making things 'fit to flatter' Online retail stores may have offered style lovers greater versatility and ease with perusing and purchasing new wears in the 21st century, but to a great extent, they've also failed to rise to the ever-growing right-t challenge. But fans of the online store who want to get their fashion x without fear of the wrong t, have found condence in Mel and Zoe's alteration and design studio in Christchurch.

B

ased on Edgeware Road, the studio is highly and widely respected. Offering hem work, repairs, alterations and a smart, popular quick x - patches for men's jeans that have seen better days - owner and operator Sandy Cattermole also specialises in the ever important attire for 'The Big Day' – wedding dresses. “With a number of brides-to-be now buying their gowns online it's important they have the reassurance that any vital alterations can be done so their dress ts perfectly.” Having partnered with some impressive fashion heavyweights, designers and identities throughout her career, Sandy is rightfully proud to work synergistically with the likes of the much-adored Annah Stretton and To Cherish wedding boutique. “From bridesmaids to brides, and alterations to men's suits - myself and my seamstress Wendy who has been in the business 40 years - work to provide a consistent service and uphold our unwavering reputation of great workmanship.” With sewing and alterations practically in her DNA, it's palpable Sandy loves what she does and always has – she took on an apprenticeship at just 15 years old. It was at this age she learned the impressive art of putting a full garment together, piece-by-piece.

WITH SEWING AND ALTERATIONS PRACTICALLY IN HER DNA, IT'S PALPABLE SANDY LOVES WHAT SHE DOES AND ALWAYS HAS – SHE TOOK ON AN APPRENTICESHIP AT JUST 15 YEARS OLD.

It is this skill that has earned Sandy a very loyal following, and, needless to say, it's also her impressive exibility and creativity that keeps customers coming back. “A lot of our work is repeat customers and word of mouth. Our existing customers refer us to their friends, who become our new customers, which is wonderful. All our customers often comment on our exibility. Because I live on the premises it works for them to be able to come and pick things up on a Sunday for example.” Further information about the studio can be found on its Facebook page or by calling the friendly team on (03) 377 8942.

COLOURFUL winter forecast

Walking into Made in the Shade is as refreshing as an icy drink on a smouldering day. It's one of those sweet local boutiques that has something for every occasion, thanks to owner Ali Musson's nicky buying.

R

ight now the store is brimming with cosy autumn wear to wrap up in. An exciting abundance of fashions including faux furs, velvets, natural wools and cottons in a palette of colours, most notably shades of orange, green and purple, are there to carry wearers effortlessly between seasons. There are many labels and pieces to fall in love with. Lizette pants, endorsed by both Oprah Winfrey and Taylor Swift, are renowned for their subtle detailing and dexterous tailoring designed to atter all body types, and this season sees different styles and textures like their blue denim-look pant. New season Bazaar, one of New Zealand's nest labels, demonstrates their ability to work with layering and elongate gures. They create the illusion of a slimmer gure by teaming long layers underneath shorter ones, simultaneously generating different looks depending upon which colours and styles are layered together.

High end fashion It was a love of fashion that started it all – that and a wardrobe lled with high end fashion pieces that were no longer worn. These pieces have found a home in Louis Who, the fashion boutique owned by Lisa Willetts, at The Mill in Waikuku.

I

found this place and I loved it,” says Lisa of The Mill, who as a new resident of Waikuku Beach became a regular visitor at Twine Antiques and Collectables. When owner Sandy Williams expanded her store area she invited Lisa to share the space, with Louis Who setting up residence in a corner of the warehouse. Their styles t well together Lisa's fashion a splash of colour surrounded by Sandy's eclectic collectables. Lisa started small, selling pieces from her own wardro be and that of her sister and two friends.

“I WANTED TO GIVE PEOPLE PIECES LIKE TRELISE COOPER FOR A REALLY GOOD PRICE,” SHE SAYS, WITH THE LIKES OF MOOCHI, MARC JACOBS, WORLD AND TRUE RELIGION DENIM, ALL WELL RECEIVED.

“I wanted to give people pieces like Trelise Cooper for a really good price,” she says, with the likes of Moochi, Marc Jacobs, World and True Religion denim, all well received. She is continually on the search for additions to her collection at Louis Who, selling excellent condition high end pieces on behalf of their owners. From simple word of mouth, Lisa receives top fashion from across North Canterbury and Christchurch, with many women taking the opportunity to give their wa rdrobes a clear out and bring in three or four of their best pieces to sell. Lisa admits she is very selective in the pieces she sells, with these limited to items from well-respected New Zealand and international labels, including recent season items from Country Road, Witchery and Top Shop.

So ly, so ly All the latest styles for autumn and winter from the top fashion labels are arriving daily at The Dresser. Positively proud of 'NZ made', the shop delights in showcasing popular brands Cashews, Chocolat, OBI, Optimum, Visage, David Carmody, Jacki Peters, Bittermoon, Frank & Molly, and the three labels – Zardi, TF and Ginger – under the Cotura umbrella made here in Christchurch.

K

nitwear is again showing strongly for the new season, including the nest and softest merino – perfect for the harsh Canterbury winter. Already, any pieces with an 'edge' are leaving the store as fast as they arrive! Retail manager Jan Clarke says it is a difcult transition this time of the year; the shop does not look as bright as it does in summer. But she is quick to point out this is easily overcome by accessorising with bright scarves, jewellery and even coloured boots! Ski rts have made a comeback this winter having been missing on the racks the last few seasons. Team them with boots and a gorgeous merino, and you are ready for any occasion. Staff at The Dresser delight in giving customers the very best service and are always prepared to go that extra mile. With this in mind, the girls are happy to provide all the style advice they can; customers have even brought in items from home they may be having trouble working into their wardrobe. The Dresser's 24-hour appro' service is great if you are a little unsure – take the outt home, try it on with your accessories and get the stamp of approval from family and friends. An eight-week layby is another convenience if you do not need the outt immediately. The Dresser appreciates that often it is not always suitable to shop during work hours, so 'shopping by appointment' is welcome. With the motto 'If our clothes don't t, our accessories certainly will', The Dresser truly believes while it may specialise in clothes for the curvaceous lady, it caters for everyone with an amazing selection of accessories. With clothes that take you from the beach (shorts and swimwear all year round) to the boardroom, and with parking at the door, shopping at The Dresser is destination shopping at its best!

Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week was re-established by fashion, beauty and modelling icon Denyse Saunders in 2013 and has quickly regained its reputation as a world class event supporting and promoting the Canterbury fashion, beauty, modelling and entertainment (including singers, dancers, staging and lighting) industries. Ms Saunders says they are honoured to be associated with the Science Alive's Celebration of Light Festival endorsed by UNESCO. “As you can imagine there will be spectacular lighting effects!”

ickets are now on sale for this world class fashion show featuring 15 selected designers and retailers on the evening of Friday 17 April at the magnicent Tannery. It certainly looks set to be another successful night of fashion, glamour and entertainment. Ms Saunders says that this time they have cut the length of the fashion show and added more entertainment. “This means the after show party will start sooner with all of the audience, the models, singers, dancers, VIPs and media.” Ms Saunders says many corporates buy tables and take their clients as it is the perfect event for both men and women to enjoy, and

one of the few where everyone is dressed in their nest. “This is a fashion show like no other and is not to be missed.” A limited number of tickets are available so be in quick as you do not want to miss out on the Canterbury fashion event of the year. Whether you are going solo, with a fabulous fashionista friend, or a corporate table of ten people, there are tickets to suit everyone. “To avoid disappointment, as many have for the last three shows, come join the media, VIPs and industry celebrities and reserve your seat or table now.” Bookings are online at www.cfbw.co.nz.

Winter's new mood Winter's conď€ dent new mood is one of modern, sophisticated attitude deď€ ned by clean lines, strong silhouettes and cool androgyny. Bold and compelling, Witchery's AW 15 collection steps out with a city swagger, expressed by the sweep of an oversized coat or the slouch of a tailored trouser. Wrapping up against the winter chill will be an exercise in sensuality where cashmere, fur, leather and shearling make for tactile layers that speak of true luxury.

Mary's Mixologist Boss Parkhill shares the secret behind making a sensational Amaretto Shine…

Boss Parkhill

How to make an Amaretto Shine Amaretto Shine is one of my original recipes and the perfect accompaniment to a perfect summer. My love for this decadent almond liqueur is unmatched, its sweetish taste clings to the palate and can be enjoyed neat or combined with a little something extra to make it 'shine'.

Glassware Serve in either a bistro or rocks glass, my personal choice would be the Luigi Bormioli Rubino available from Total Food Equipment.

Recipe 45ml Galliano Amaretto 15ml Absolut Raspberri 10ml Lemon Juice 15ml Gomme (Simple Syrup) Orange slice Methodology 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Add all ingredients to a Boston mixing glass and shake 3. Pour into the prepared glassware 4. Garnish with a slice of orange, and enjoy the shine!

& crafty business This year's Great Kiwi Beer Festival is on Saturday 28 March in Hagley Park.

O

ne of the highlights of this year's Craft Beer Academy is sure to be 'Who's Brewing in Our Backyard' which will feature a selection of ve brewers currently operating in Christchurch. Pomeroy's Craft Beer Academy coordinator Ava Wilson says people underestimate just how many breweries there are in the city. “It was hard to limit this seminar to just ve breweries! The craft beer scene in Christchurch has evolved so much in the past ten years.”

Those interested in the nancial side of craft beer should not miss 'Yeastie Boys & Shares' - the opportunity to hear direct from the Yeastie Boys who raised $500,000 within 30 minutes of launching their rst equity crowd funding campaign. Naturally this seminar will be enhanced with a selection of Yeastie Boys brews. The seminar line-up also includes Gabi Michael from Gladeld Malt in Dunsandel, producers of some of the world's best malts – beloved by both professional and home brewers. Other seminars are 'World Beer Cup Winners', which features some of the winning beers from an international competition dubbed the Olympics of Beer and 'A Session Beer Session' – a love song to lower ABV beers, with tastings but no actual love songs! Festival Director Callam Mitchell says, “We have 50 different craft breweries from across New Zealand and the world, pouring more than 300 different beers.” Admission tickets are on sale for $39.90 (plus booking fee) from Dash Tickets www.dashtickets.co.nz. Trendy turf Gen Y babies and the offspring of the 21st century who were 'tweens' circa 1998 and religiously dedicated themselves to a diet of pop culture will no doubt be familiar with the “hoochy mama show your nana” lyrics broadcast in perpetuity by radio stations the world over until they lost their street cred.

A

ll grown up now, the real question is, have these youthful souls since developed a palate for the ner things in life? And, more importantly, are they in the know about the real and authentic Mama Hooch that lives at 817 Colombo Street in Christchurch? They should be. Founded by the talent behind Venuti, Mama Hooch is, indeed, in the business of showing herself off as one of the latest additions to Christchurch's new restaurant and bar scene that's slowly but surely being re-energised. The best part is that Mama Hooch isn't just befriending the Gen Y'ers, it's viewed as trendy turf and a desirable spot to wine and dine by the generations that have come before them too. Thanks to its all occasion charm, it has the ability to pacify and satisfy diners and/or coffee addicts on a dash in dash out kind of schedule; coax limber movers and shakers onto a dance oor that doesn't sleep until the wee hours, and tickle the food fancy of patrons looking for a long lunch including tasty bites and tipples.

FELLOW DINERS HAVE WAXED LYRICAL ABOUT THE DIRTY BURGER, WHICH IS, APPARENTLY THE HOLY GRAIL OF BURGERS. FOR VEGETARIAN DINERS LIKE MOI, THERE ARE OPTIONS SUCH AS CRISPY MUSHROOMS WITH SMOKY MAYO.

Yellow fever The entrance to your home should be like putting on your best dress. It's the rst glimpse of the home within, and when you open your front door to guests your entrance and hall should scream welcome!

H

ighlight your front door so visitors can nd it easily with welldened access from the street. The front door is a great place to test out bold colour, or at least a contrasting colour to your exterior palette. Hallways can be tricky spaces to work with, and aren't always as proportionally grand as we would like them to be. When it comes to decorating a hallway, treat it with just as much importance as any other part of the house. These types of transitional spaces are the perfect places to be bold and condent – to be creative with colour and pattern, to experiment, and make big statements with paint, wallpaper, artworks and lighting. Avoid recessed lighting in a long hallway; this type of space lends itself perfectly to at least two hanging pendants, which will be a much more eye-catching alternative. If your hall is long, consider painting the end wall in a darker colour so it seems closer. If your hall is narrow, paint the side walls lighter so it seems wider.

Want more inspiration? A new series of handy Style Guides is available free in store at Resene ColorShops and online at resene.co.nz. Wanted PERFECTIONIST Perfectionist tilers “I'm a perfectionist – really fussy about the standard of the work that I do,” says Tile Master's Issac Petros. “We have built our reputation on our commitment and quality workmanship and are very aware of the need to provide quality in both our nished product and in our service to all our clients, from the smallest of jobs for private individuals to the largest of commercial contracts.”

WITH TILE MASTER YOU WILL SEE YOUR BATHROOM TILED BEFORE IT IS TILED!

I

ndeed perfection is what is called for in the laying of tiles to achieve visual impact, to make a stunning rst impression and to add signicant style and value to your home. Tiles are true design elements that are immediately visible whether on walls, oors, along a bathtub or as a stove splash back. “No one ever walks into a house and says 'Wow, who did your plumbing?'” Issac Petros says. “So there's a real sense of accomplishment when people can actually see the hard work you've put in and admire the nished product.” Issac can hardly remember when he didn't

have tiles and grout in his hands. He thinks he might have started in the business as young as thirteen helping out a family friend at weekends. Now he and his Tile Master team of highly experienced tradesmen specialise in all types of tiling, including ceramic, mosaic and porcelain. They provide complete tiling, waterproong and under-tile heating systems, as well as exterior plastering. They can help with the preparation works for a tiling project and supply and install the tiles, water proong systems, shower glass solutions and much more.

INSPIRATIONAL DESIGN Whether you have strong design ideas of your own or looking for inspiration Dema Kitchens will help you achieve your desired look.

“One of our key points of difference is the ability to show clients the completed project before we've even begun,” Issac says. “We will come to take measurements and pictures of the place and our team of interior designers will draw it up with the selected tiles. This way you can see your bathroom tiled before it is tiled and avoid a costly mistake. This service is offered for free to our clients” The Tile Master team pride themselves on their knowledge and are continually keeping abreast of the ever changing industry, whether it be adhesives, grouts, sealers, or the newest technology in tile manufacturing or the differing types of nishes available for natural stone. “We always strive to give complete customer satisfaction and our repeat clients and customer referrals are testament to this,” Issac says. “The feedback we receive from satised customers is quite amazing.” To see some of these testimonials visit www.tilemaster.co.nz and for more information on Tile Master phone Issac on 022 422 9284 or email info@tilemaster.co.nz.

t means lots of new stock arriving at Terra Viva Home & Garden including hundreds of fresh camellias, a big range of spring-owering bulbs, from scented freesias, to daffodils, to exotic tulips, and in the not-too-distant future all the roses, hellebores, and new season's trees. Autumn is perfect for sowing new lawns or renovating existing ones, which includes feeding, spraying for weeds and fungal problems, and scarifying if necessary. Call in and talk to Tracey at Terra Viva about any lawn issues you may have. And now is the time to stroll around the garden with a notebook, critique the garden, and write down the changes you want to make this spring. Perennials can be trimmed and tidied, and it's a good idea to mark them with a small stake to avoid plunging a spade through them in winter. Want to grow your own organic fertiliser in the vegetable garden? Now is the time to plant 'green crops' of mustard, blue lupins, and garden barley, all of which are soil nitrogen-xers. Autumn is the time to plant for winter – it's easy with pansies, polyanthus, primulas, and violas. And now is the time to plant winter vegetables to grow them to a good size before the cold temperatures and short days arrive.

The tools for self expression Classes at local art school and café, Art Metro, are far from typical. Here, you won't nd a group of frustrated students all painting the same tired vase of owers, sneaking peeks at their neighbours' canvasses for comparison. Livia Dias

Unlike conventional art schools, at Art Metro there is no prescribed course of study. Each student gets the advice and guidance they need to reach their own artistic potential. The environment is informal and supportive – and that's what keeps people coming back week after week, and some for many years. Meet the teachers Livia Dias is a well-established artist who has exhibited internationally. Her preferred medium is oil but she also enjoys expressing herself in acrylic as well. “I began drawing and painting at the age of 13 in my home country, Brazil. My passion hasn't stopped since.

Wayne Seyb “My style incorporates Old Masters techniques learnt under the tutelage of my uncle, a professional artist and art tutor. I draw my inspiration from New Zealand's scenery, animals and children and explore light, colour and spontaneity.”

Wayne Seyb studied art in Dunedin and has exhibited throughout New Zealand and in Europe, and has travelled extensively to view and study art. "Painting is a very intuitive activity. It is a good way of looking at something and seeing things in a new way. I am particularly interested in exploring the way nature is experienced individually. “I want to give people the tools for self-expression. I believe that painting is a very organic process and that trusting in the process of painting leads to good results.” For more information including class schedules, enjoy a coffee at the on-site café and watch a class in action. Insurance Rebuilds: the silver lining External affairs with Tim Goom

With the recent passing of the fourth anniversary of the February earthquake, many are just now nalising their claims with EQC or insurers for earthquake damage. It has been a long arduous road for many, however once you nd yourself at the point of reaching agreement around what your rebuild or repairs may look like, you are also potentially entering the most creative and exciting stage of the process!

W

hether it is a rebuild on your existing land, repairing your existing house and land or building a new house on a new section, each scenario presents you with an opportunity to create or reinvent your perfect outdoor lifespaceTM.

Who covers what? Generally household insurance policies will cover driveways, fencing, paths, paving and swimming pools. Some insurance policies may also include a landscaping allowance which can be used for softscaping. EQC covers the land under your house, within 8 metres of your house and the land your access way is built on up to 60 metres. Since Canterbury’s quakes, many quantity surveyors have been hard at work providing independent advice on the costings and scopes of work generated by insurers for building repairs and rebuilds. However a quantity surveyor can also make assessments in relation to landscaping, providing assurance that your insurer has got it right. Everyone knows of someone for whom a quantity surveyor has arrived at signicantly different conclusions (and costings!) to their insurer in relation to house repairs. This can be equally applicable to landscaping, particularly if the repair strategy for the landscaping has been formulated without specialised knowledge and expertise in all the areas of hard and soft landscape works.

Seek advice early! While it is undoubtedly vital to choose carefully the builder you engage to repair your home, it is equally important to take advice from a landscape architect before commencing your landscape works. Often the contract you enter in to with your builder will include provision for hardscaping. Without the input of a landscape architect, patios, paths and decks will be positioned in the most cost effective position without consideration of the implications for the design and aesthetic of your outdoor areas. Involving a landscape architect from the outset will ensure that the design concept for the building and the landscaping will work together in synergy and maximise the impact of your budget.

TO ENSURE A SEAMLESS PROCESS, IT MAKES SENSE TO ENGAGE YOUR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT AT THE SAME TIME AS YOUR BUILDER AND ARCHITECT.

We have had a number of concerned clients make contact at the point when the build is complete and the driveway is about to be constructed as part of the scope of works. At this point clients may realise they would like to consider a greater range of options for their hardscaping than might be offered by a builder. Work is then halted so the outdoor spaces can be designed by a landscape architect. To ensure a seamless process, it makes sense to engage your landscape architect at the same time as your builder and architect. In doing so you are much more likely to achieve your desired outcome with better design, less stress and greater efciency. Having those involved in the design and construction of your repair/rebuild simultaneously ensures far better communication and sharing of information between all involved.

An opportunity A rebuild or new build provides a clean slate to rethink the design of your outdoor spaces specic to your needs and lifestyle and to integrate your indoor and outdoor lifespacesTM. Alternatively, If your home is being repaired, this will present wonderful opportunities to make changes, big or small, which will vastly improve your enjoyment of your outdoor areas and the overall value of your property.

THROUGH A WINDOW WHEN INSTALLED WITH A TIGHT FITTING FRAME.

ith winter fast approaching Cantabrians are looking to Kiwala Interiors to help them bunker down and beautify their homes at the same time. It's kind of a double winter whammy that enables a fresh aesthetic and the chance to ensure families stay warm and dry during the colder temperatures. Award winning Kiwala Interiors has established an enviable reputation in the residential market, which has been heightened by the founder/operator Kim Gavin's professional prowess in the world of design. Kiwala Interiors gives homes the look and feel they deserve with its nous for decoration that won't break the bank. Right now the business is spoiling clients for choice with a compelling range of window nishes. “With winter approaching it's vital to think about the best options for windows – studies show glazing is often the weakest link when it comes to winter heat loss. Between 21-30% of heat loss is through windows as the heat moves towards the cold,” Kim says. “As the heat reaches the window it cools,

falls to the oor and then creates a cold draught as the air circulates back into the room. Apart from well-lined drapes, a tight tting window cover reduces winter heat loss by trapping a layer of insulating air between the window and the room.” Kiwala's range of interior shutters are a attering xture for any home as well as being very effective in reducing heat loss through a

window when installed with a tight tting frame. This saves money thanks to lower energy bills while creating a warmer, healthier and more comfortable home for families. Barriers to innovation The do's and don'ts of designing public buildings are limiting our chances for forward thinking design, architect Cymon Allfrey explains… Cymon Allfrey

We were recently invited to contribute to a tender. It is a site of signicance because of its location in part of the city that we, as the public, have elevated onto a pedestal through the formulation of our City Plan. From the Share An Idea campaign it was identied that we wanted a greener more compact city, one with better urban spaces, one which embraced innovation and one which grouped users in a logical way; ideas resulted in the 'frame' and precincts to deliver this vision.

INNOVATION REQUIRES IMAGINATION, TIME, ENERGY AND LATERAL THINKING.

T

he documentation to tender itself was around forty pages in length, a signicant addition to the connes already placed on the site by the City Plan. What the tender document does is put a box around the site. While rules and the maximum standards are prescribed in the City Plan, the tender document takes it a step further developing a set of minimum standards including height and width, minimum footprint, the prescriptive use, how the building will engage with other sites, where the car park might be, how quickly the design and construction will be undertaken and so forth. In an aesthetic manner, while required by the tender document to design a 'landmark building', creativity and innovation is suppressed by the prescriptive measures. Innovation isn't achieved through the depth of someone's pocket but by how wide and open their eyes are. Innovation requires

imagination, time, energy and lateral thinking about how to challenge the 'normal', not necessarily to comply with it. An over thought prescriptive approach puts the blinkers on. In this case the opportunity is lost to achieve what we, as a city, wanted in the rebuild. It is taking away the discussions around landmark buildings that we can be proud of and places too many connes around what is allowed to be achieved. Landmark buildings are those buildings which polarise and energise debate. Internationally every great city has them. They create a stir in their day but with hindsight bring a respect for their forward thinking. What happens through prescription is a loss of innovation, it takes away the opportunity to be inventive. Every corner should have the chance to be unique, to be a landmark, and be unlimited by the barriers to innovation. www.caarc.co.nz

certifying building location certicates. Another popular service is the changing of cross-lease titles to fee-simple titles, particularly as a result of a rebuild. This alleviates the need for an updated ats plan ever again, and adds value to your home.

Savvy homeowners and investors have long recognised that Kiwis' main means of saving is paying off their mortgages. Another achievable means of growing wealth is by subdividing larger properties. Be it to sell off a part of a section, build upon it for rental income, or increase property capital, there are numerous subdivision choices.

S

urvus Consultants has been working with many homeowners who are rebuilding and several are taking the opportunity to subdivide their sections into smaller lots. "Previously the homes were positioned in a way that subdivision wasn't possible. But repositioning the new home during the rebuild process, means people can subdivide," says Hamish Frizzell, Survus Consultants managing director. There is also increasing demand for larger rural blocks to be subdivided into l ifestyle

Its exceptional relationship with all local councils means property owners can breathe easy and leave it to the experts. "Having accurate, correct site survey information at the beginning of a project ensures the process runs smoothly." Hamish says this is especially important in ood management areas, where land has experienced lateral movement or where there are tight building envelopes. blocks, and with some of the district councils' new provisions, this is becoming more achievable in certain areas. To maximise investment, information is the key ingredient. Survus Consultants comes into its own here as it is large enough to employ a good number of highly qualied professionals, yet small enough to be personally involved in each project. Its work includes surveying urban and rural subdivisions, resource consent applications, redening boundaries in earthquake damaged areas, as well as setting out new houses and
